This past weekend, my beloved and I went on a three day jeep trip in the Judean Desert.  Eli's sons (24 &22) came with us, as well as a bunch of friends from his hometown, and of course the lovely Helen with whom we stayed in Ancee during our trip to france.

I was a bit apprehensive about meeting the whole gang like that, but it ended up being very pleasent, they are a really cool bunch of people.

I was also apprehensive about driving the jeep off-road, but I finally got the courage the third day (confession: it was the easiest day) and that left me wanting more...  Eli also drove, sound incredible that a blind man would drive, but he is really good at taking isnstructions, pretty much in the same way he does skiing, he drives.   It was odd that I felt safer riding on the back of the jeep with him driving than I did when I was behind the wheel.

On the way home we just missed the floods at the Kumran Caves, where 4 people were killed while hanging down from snapling ropes.  I for one am glad to not have been in the area, though I would like to witness a flood one of these days...

When we got home Eli went up to Afula again for another physio session.  During the weekend his leg slowly swelled up with liquid.  The physiotherapist said it is almost a sure  indication that his miniscus is torn but that we won't know for sure until Wednesday (hopefully).

So I am home alone with Ludwig until tomorrow afternoon when he returns.  Last night I decided to go to the gym.  I really am trying to get back into the diet and fitness thing.  There was a lecture in the evening about achieving goals. Lots of me-me-me by the lecturer who is also the owner of the gym, but he had some good points, namely focus on the goal and don't let anything get in the way of it.  After the lecture was over I went up to the gym and got on the Cross Country trainer, set the time for 30 minutes and started gliding away.  When one of the trainers at the gym came over and told me there would be an abs class in 15 minutes, I remembered my goal...and stayed on the trainer until I was done.  Then I got on the treadmill for another 30 minutes. By the time I was done I was totally pooped but it all felt really good.

Today is a rest day, I have set a goal for today of doing something creative when I get home, even if tiny and insignificant, I will try to accomplish i before I get to bed.  Tomorrow I go back to the gym again for some more...

So much for keeping up with it...

I turned 35 yesterday, where does time go?  Not that I mind being 35, I really never did have an issue with age, I just hope I feel the same way about it in twenty or 30 years...

No special celebrations occured.  I wasn't really in the mood for organizing anything and neither of us really felt like going out.  Eli bought me a beautiful bouqet of red roses and tulips, we ordered in some Chinese (I let him choose even though it was my birthday) and then as usual, I fell asleep on  the couch... Work has been kicking my butt lately, and my back has been giving me some trouble, so it's no wonder I get tired very quickly.  Eli is very sweet about it, but I'm sure he's a little frustrated that I fall asleep on him as soon as I sit myself of the sofa...

Tonight I won't be falling asleep on him, since he went to Afula for the weekend to spend with his son who just got back from Nice.  Hopefully he will be able to get in some physio for his knee and start recouperating from his  skiing accident.

And because I have the weekend to myself I am planning to pamper myself.  Tomorrow I will start by going to the hairdresser and redoing my colour and hilights and maybe a new cut and then if I can find a place that accepts walk-ins I might just go and get a manicure-pedicure and then I might just go out and buy some new summer shoes and shirts because I have none!  Friday night I am going on a moonlit bike ride with the tandem group (minus my beloved who cannot ride at this time).  I hope the ride won't be too hard on my back.  We end the ride with breakfast as sun rise and then we take a but up to Jerusalem and Tel Aviv.  Hopefully I will be back home before 12 noon Saturday and can get some art work done, my fingers are itching...

Chchchchanges...

Many things going on in my life these days, and the Internet isn't a place I frequent that much anymore, and when I do, it's more to check things out than to write things down.  I barely ever post on the forums I used to post at in the past and as my three faithful readers have probably noticed, I haven't updated my blog in ages and ages.

As part of the changes in my life I am trying to see where I can curb my expenses and save a bit more than I do these days. The first thing that called out to me while going over my credit card application was that I pay $5 a month for a blog I don't blog in.  Now $5 a day is not what's going to make the big difference, but I figured before I cut it out of my expenses, I'll give blogging another run to make sure. So here I am.

So what are all these things going on in my life you ask? T'is love... (For those of you who do keep tabs on me and know the story, you can either skip through this part or read it again...)

One of my last posts was about me going on a bike ride with my friend Eli. I wasn't too forthcoming with information back then, because at that time already, we were more than friends, I guess I just wanted to wait a while before I announced it to the world (or more accurately, hi mom and dad...).

Well, the news was broken and we moved in together a few months ago, and other than clashes with Ludwig the cat, things are going really well.  A few weeks ago we brought Tango, the seeing eye dog and now he's much more independent, though he still hates the city with a passion and can't wait to get out of here.

Last week we went to Nice for a week to visit with his older son.  It was an amazing experience, Nice and the French Riviera were breathtaking.  We were staying at the house where his son lives and every morning, I opened my eyes to see the cliffs dropping down to the ocean and every morning the picuture appeared differently.  His son and his friends were the perfect hosts, we fell in love with them.  When they come back from their "tour of duty" I hope I can make them feel as much at ease at our home as they made us in theirs.  We also travelled to visit our friend Ellen living in Ancee, not far from Geneva, replacing the Mediterenean sunshine for flurries and snow covered peaks.  It was great as was the welcome we received in her home.  I would have loved to stay another week or so, I wasn't quite ready to come back to work. On the other hand, I'm also feeling good at home, though a bit lonely, because Eli went back to France the day after we returned for a ski trip with a group  of IDF veterans.  While I am at home I have to keep the peace between Ludwig and Tango, or more correctly, I have to watch that Ludwig doesn't hurt Tango who is trained to sit there and take the abuse.  I am very near a point I am afraid, where I will have to find Lulu a new home, because he is making living in mine quite impossible.

After Eli returns from his trip we are going to start looking for a new house, hopefully it will be sooner than later and hopefully there will be a nice yard and maybe Ludwig can become and outdoorsy cat and live there.

Pesach is coming up.  Not sure yet what I am doing.  We have a few joint invites, a few separate invites, it mostly depends on Eli's son and where he requests Eli be this year.  I'm all for just spending it like the Israelites, in the desert.

So here it is, my first update in a long long time, and hopefully it will be a much shorter break until the next...

TGIF!

This has been the longest week ever. I am so tired.  I haven't done one hour of overtime this week, yet my work week has been so hectic and draining, I just can't wait for 5:30pm to get the hell out of here today.  Thankfully I have company coming over, so I have a good excuse not to stay a minute longer.

My friend Eli is coming over this evening and we're going out for dinner and then tomorrow we are going to breakfast with Martin and then for a spin around Hashmonaim street, the bicycle centre of Israel, Eli has never been.. he wants to feel the atmosphere...  Around noon his friend Avi will pick us up and we will go to Jerusalem for lunch with Orly and the rest of the tandem group and Saturday, if we find Eli a front rider (Benji had to go to Budapest and Oded is up North at his parents' place) we will go for a ride in the Jerusalem area.  Should be a fun weekend.

Having company, and blind company moreso, has been one of the motivators for me to get rid of a lot of clutter and junk.  Once the fridge moved to the kitchen, I finally removed the rest of the stuff that was leaning against it... So the futon frame, which is great wood I could be used for this and that in the future...gone.  The old directors chairs I've been schlepping for years now and haven't gotten around to refinishing, gone.  A bunch of dust gathering knick knacks of no other value, gone.  There is still plenty of other stuff I am ready to let go of...but as usual, taking them down the stairs is the bigger issue than being willing to let them go... I'm just lazy and unmotivated, that's all.

WIP

I've decided I like my apartment enough to start actually living in it and not passing through... I've been reading Apartment Therapy over and over and while I'm not really doing the 8 step cure I am taking things from it and slowly getting the place together.

I've finally finished painting the studio and I love how it turned out.  I also love my new large desk and now I am waiting for the handyman to come and hang some shelves so I can put all of my art supplies in order. I've decided that if I wait for myself to do the work it will never get done...

Said handyman, who is extremely nice, was hereto finally remove the door post in the kitchen so I can put my fridge where it belongs and clear up the hallway for a proper "Landing Strip".

The place is already looking and feeling much better, and now I have a big mess and a fridge to clean up....

Art

A few weeks ago, I received a lovely original piece of at from the very talended and generous DJ Pettit.  I've been meaning to post it forever but the Alyn ride came and went and I got busy with other stuff and it took me a while to actually take a photo and upload it.   So it's long overdue but it's here and I can't wait until I finish the studio so I can hang it up on the wall and draw inspiration from it.

Thank you once again DJ, I love it!

I just got home from a very long weekend last night. Had the greatest time.

Eli invited me to come down to the Golden Tulip hotel at the Dead Sea and spend a few days with him and his friends courtesy of the Ministry of Defense. How could I refuse an offer for a free vacation at the Dead Sea.  Nir and Udi were away from the office anyway, so it was a good opportunity.

I woke up early Wednesday morning and caught the bus from the train station. By 12 noon I was already in the Jaccuzi...  Eli, Berko and Martin and all army veterans, injured during their army service and they have been spending these vacations together for over 15 years now.  I never laughed as hard as I did these two days.  Friday morning the guys went on a  jeep trip so I decided to go to Jerusalem to visit Orli.

Getting to Jerusalem was an adventure in itself.  The guys dropped me off at the bus station at around 9am and there was supposed to be a direct bus at 9:30. A few minutes after they left me, what I believed to be a service cab came by and the driver told me there were no buses until 11:30 and that if I want he would take me to Beer Sheva and from there I could catch a bus...  I have no idea what posessed me to believe him and accept the offer.  I was in the car with him and he started asking me all sorts of intimate questions, and no matter how many times I told him I wasn't interested in having such a conversation, he persisted. I started feeling extremely uncomfortable, but here I was, in the middle of nowhere. If I had been smart I would have told him to stop the car and gotten off, instead I rode with him to Beer Sheva, only when we got to Beer Sheva, and I asked him what I owed him for the ride, he told me he wasn't actually a service cab but a driver for the hotel management company...  I'd like to think I was very lucky on this one, it could have ended differently. That will learn me to stick with the  bus schedule...

It was already getting late in Beer Sheva, and I was contemplating skipping Jerusalem and going straight home, but in the end I decided it could be fun to spend the weekend with Orli and it was.  I got to her place at around 2pm, was handed a water bottle, helmet and pair of gloves and told we were going for a ride.  We went with her friend Debbie, the two of them were on the tandem and I was on Debbie's bike. Both bikes had break problems so I decided not to take my chances with trying the tandem.  We had a very nice ride, we wanted to stop by one of the many water springs in the Jerusalem hills, but apparently Friday afternoon is when religious men come to cleanse, so were were rudely told to move on. We decided to be defiant and stay put.  It really bugs me when private people appropriate the public domain for whatever reasons, it even bugs me more when a public water spring becomes a private Mikveh... What bugged me most was the attitude of the "request" to move on, because if we had been asked nicely and politely I don't think we would have thought about it twice.  Anyway, we moved a few feet away, had our tea break and rode back to Orli's.  That evening we went to dinner and Crazy Land.  The next morning we went riding again, this time with Magdi, he's an Egyptian Copt, who's been living in Israel for ten years now and he is just the sweetest guy. We rode up to the Arthur Rubinstein forest and memorial, which are at the end of a very long climb.  We huffed and puffed our way up, had more tea and on the way back Magdi insisted I try the tandem, on the road. I was a bit hesitent because of the breaks, I was also a bit tired from riding Magdi's bike which wasn't a proper fit for me, so I only rode a short section of road. It was an odd feeling. I felt I was being pushed and pulled from behind and I had to keep the whole thing balanced.  If the breaks were working properly I think I would have gone further, but I didn't want to take my chances. I've been invited to a party they are having next Friday, and a ride on Saturday, so I'll try it again then.  I definitely felt after this very short ride, that I have to become stronger if I am going to do this.

After the ride we went to the old city for some Hummus and coffee, followed by an afternoon nap and a visit to the mall. I had planned to leave for home no later that the third star was out, in the end I stayed until close to 11pm, and truth be told I didn't really want to get home...

But here I am at work for yet another day... which hopefully will be very short...

Wheels of Love - Round 2

I've been told I haven't updated in a while... so here goes...

Another year, another ride over.  I wasn't sure how enthusiastic I was about doing the ride this year, and I was already contemplating maybe skipping next year… and then came Friday and I went up to Alyn to deposit my bike and got my rider's package and before I knew it, it was 5am Sunday morning and I was on the bus to Jerusalem, bumping into old friends and meeting new ones… Just as we arrived at Mt. Scopus it started pouring, everyone scattering to find cover, but I managed to find Billy and Elyse and a few other familiar faces and Silvie, the sweet newcomer, I've ridden with on several occasions and was so happy when she decided to join in on the fun.  I was happy to see Yuval was our "flying" mechanic again this year and the sweet Ron abandoned the road route and joined us as well.  As we zoomed down the road from Jerusalem to Mesada, I knew I wasn't going to pass this up next year… Even during the last little haul from the highway to the guest house where I seemed to run out of fuel and only managed to drag myself up there thanks to encouragement from Yuval.
I found out I was sharing a room with Silvie, Elyse and Viviene, all familiar lovely faces. The presence of beer during the first night was sorely missed, thank goodness some people thought about bringing booze along for the ride (how didn't I?)

On day two we rode from Mesada to Hatzeva.  We started with 20K on-road to the  Zohar junction and from there to the Pratzim dry river bed, the Sdom dry river bed, another trip around Pratzim for those who were fast enough (that wouldn't be me) and from there to the Dead Sea Works for a lunch break.  We got a very nice welcome at the DSW, and I in particular since the DSW is one of our companies.  It's really a pity I couldn't get their sponsorship in my name, the hospital got to them directly before I got a chance… I'm going to start earlier for next year, like next week, maybe I can get sponsorship from another of our subsidiaries and get credit for it.  After lunch we got back on the bikes and to the road where we proceeded to ride until we got to Ein Tamar, a pretty God forsaken place in the Arava, where we got off the road and proceeded to ride what seemed like hundreds of kilometers, but was about more like 20km, in the most horrendous terrain one can imagine.  It was like riding a washboard covered in sand and pebbles, which meant that one had to switch to a low gear and just pedal away until it was over.  It was a nightmare and when that was over…we still had a long way to go. I was pretty sure I wasn't riding anymore. My muscles were sore, my private parts were sore and I was tired.  But when we got to Hatzeva that evening, and cold bottles of beer were on hand, and after a warm shower and a hearty meal I was feeling much better already.  I hung out with and Elyse and some other people and then the best experience of the whole week happened.  Silvie told me how she'd met Orli riding that day. Orli is blind, she has been blind since she was two years old (more than 40 years) and she rides a tandem bike, one of three blind riders doing the ride this year.  Orli invited Silvie to the bonfire they were having and Silvie invited me and Elyse and so eventually we went to warm ourselves by the fire.  At first it was a bit awkward, people who know me will say I am outgoing, but in truth, I have a real hard problem approaching strangers, so at first there were a few moments of silence, and then I started talking to Eli who was sitting next to me.  We have since become very close friends, and I feel so lucky for meeting him, Orli and the rest of their angels, Oded, Benji, Ron, Yuval and Chen, who is Eli's right hand and eyes.  These people impressed me so much. Eli and Orli for being able to see more without their eyes than most people do, for not giving up when times are tough, for being so active and so positive. I found out that Orli not only rides, but she is actually the driving force behind their riding group.  I found out she's a great cook and hostess, I found out that she is a gifted photographer and a talented carpenter.  Eli too is very active, he goes spinning almost every day, he runs a business, and he finds time to help out a friend who has been suffering from shellshock.  He is so determined to live a happy and full life despite his disabilities, and every time we speak with him I am more and more in awe of him.
The minute I clicked with this gang it was "true love", I spent most of the rest of the ride with them and every time I was close to saying I had had enough, there they were, zooming past me, giving me the encouragement to finish the next little bit.
From what I am writing now, one would gather that the ride was very difficult for me. The physical aspect of it wasn't so bad, but the chafing made sitting on the bike very difficult. Every time I chose to get off the bike I had to think twice about how it would feel to sit back down, at some point in the ride I just became proficient in riding standing up…

On day three we rode from Hatzeva to Yahel.  It was another 100K day (as were the two days prior).  We started on the road to the Nekarot riverbed, we rode through Nekarot, to Ashosh, to Barak and Pharan and back to the road at Kushi Rimon's and a 27K ride on the road with headwinds to Yahel.  Because it was a long day, it was determined that only people who would get to Kushi's by 3pm will be able to continue on the road and that anyone who came in after that will have to be bussed.  Since riding the road on chunky wheels against the wind did not appeal to me, I decided to take my time and enjoy the day.  When I finally got to Kushi's I found Eli, Orli and Benji waiting. They decided not to go on. Oded on the other hand, took Silvie for a ride on the tandem.  I don't believe she's quite recovered yet…

That evening Silvie and Elyse went to sleep at Ktura and I stayed at Yahel, and the gang was sleeping in the room across from mine, so we further got a chance to get acquainted.  We ate a horribly oily dinner together, drank together, sat at another bonfire courtesy of Chen and finally had a decent night's sleep.

Day four was supposed to be our rest day. Ha!  Only 45K from Yahel to Shacharut, but with headwinds most of the day and sand storms, the ride just took forever.  It was a nice ride though, and I was starting to feel a little better and again I had the encouragement of good friends.  When we got to Shacharut we discovered that the men were sleeping in one tent the women in another (the one farther away from the bathrooms…) and that there were only three showers for each gender.  The gang was planning to go sleep at Kibbutz Samar as Eli didn't want to stay.  Then Oded came and said that there were rooms available right there for 400NIS per room. Eli told him that if he can get two rooms for that price they will stay.  They agreed to the new price and they ended up staying.  Eli invited me to stay in their room, which I refused, but I didn't refuse the use of a private shower… That night after having dinner at the large tent, we lit another bonfire and ended up sleeping in its smoke. Not the best way to wake up to day 5, but the end was almost there.

Before we went to bed Eli was predicting the winds would be with us on Thursday. It was hard to believe him, but I guess while he can't see the here and now he can see into the future… Once again there were time constraints and we were told that if we weren't going to make it to the off-road portion of the ride by 10am we would have to continue on the road.  I had a slow start to the day and of course I didn't make the cutoff time, so I stayed on the road, the winds, as Eli had predicted were with us all the way.  I reached the gathering point at around 11:30. All the rest of the riders were supposed to get there by 12noon for lunch and then we were supposed to descend to Eliat together.  Rumors started circulating that the roadies were falling apart on the way and had to be picked up and bussed to the gathering point, and we waited and waited, and waited, and we could have all ridden the off road portion of the ride after all.  The Roadies started showing up at around 2pm and we had more than three hours to sit in the sun (or shade for those who were lucky to find it).

Once everyone had gotten there, eaten and rested we had one final climb up the Hizkiyahu Mountain and a wonderfully fast descent into Eilat.  While the gang fixed and unpacked the tandems I let Eli and Orli to their rooms.  When I located my room I discovered I was sharing with a group of teenaged girls and freaked out (there were eight of them and were very loud and the line to get into the showers seemed way too long.  I immediately ran over to Orli's and told her I was using hers. In the end Oded said he was going to sleep at the beach that night (even angels need some rest sometimes) and that I can have his bed…

That evening we had a big party at the Sport Hotel in Eilat.  Good food, a performance by the Black Hebrews and lots of twirling on the dance floor with Eli, who is an awesome dancer.  The only downside was that the mechanics were stuck at the hostel unpacking bikes and couldn't join us for the celebrations, which they totally deserved to be a part of (something to emphasize to the organizers next year…).

Friday morning was full of emotional goodbyes.  Unfortunately I wasn't able to say goodbye to everyone as we were pretty much rushed to get on the buses for the long ride back home.

Overall it was an awesome experience. I'm still finding it hard to come back to earth. The desert views, the new friendships, the old ones, all left me with the appetite for more.
Next year's routes have already been announced, and barring any unforeseen circumstances, y'all know, I'm going to be there…
